Glimpses of Work

Context

Pediatric oncology nursing plays a critical role in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to children with cancer. However, there is a need for a dedicated professional platform to support nurses, strengthen collaboration, and advance pediatric oncology nursing practice across India.

Purpose

The Pediatric Oncology Nursing Association was established to provide a national professional platform for pediatric oncology nurses, promote professional development, facilitate knowledge and experience sharing, and strengthen the nursing workforce caring for children with cancer.

What we have Done

Following the Nursing Conference held in February 2024, the need to establish a dedicated professional body for pediatric hemato-oncology nursing in India was identified.

A core group meeting was subsequently held on 2 September 2024 at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai, to discuss the formation and initial structure of the proposed professional body.

The Pediatric Oncology Nursing Association was formally launched under the Paediatric Hemato-Oncology (PHO) Chapter of IAP during the 4th National Paediatric Oncology Nursing Conference, held from 17–19 September 2025 at ACTREC, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai. The launch marked a significant milestone in establishing a unified professional platform to advance pediatric oncology nursing, strengthen professional development, and foster collaboration among pediatric oncology nurses across India.

Next Steps
  • Operationalize the Association and establish its membership and leadership structure.
  • Expand membership and representation across pediatric oncology centres and regions.
  • Develop professional development, networking, and capacity-building opportunities for members.
  • Strengthen collaboration with national and international pediatric oncology nursing organizations.

Context

ICCI is conducting a national survey to assess baseline standards for pediatric oncology nursing across tertiary care centres in India. The initiative is aligned with the SIOP Baseline Standards for Pediatric Oncology Nursing and aims to strengthen the quality and consistency of pediatric oncology nursing practice across the country.

Purpose

The survey aims to identify gaps in nursing standards, understand educational and training needs, assess the availability of resources and infrastructure, and generate evidence based informto develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for pediatric oncology nursing in India.

What We Have Done
  • Initiated a national survey across tertiary care centres providing pediatric oncology services.
  • Presented and discussed the survey objectives, approach, and proposed vision at the 6th International and 24th National ONAI Conference in Kolkata in December 2025.
  • Engaged pediatric oncology nursing stakeholders to build awareness and support for strengthening baseline nursing standards in India.
Next Steps
  • Complete data collection and analysis to identify key gaps and priority areas.
  • Develop recommendations based on the survey findings to strengthen pediatric oncology nursing standards.
  • Use the findings to inform SOP development, training programmes, and capacity-building initiatives for pediatric oncology nurses across India.
